Leaving in a few weeks for a few days in Charleston.  It's my first trip.  Would love to hear if you have any suggestions of favorite places to eat or shop!

Have a great weekend.

Poogans porch was amazing and their shrimp and grits have a blue crab gravy! But the house tours there were fabulous...you are going to fall in love with that city!

Charleston is so cool--youll have a great time! Look for a Mary Jackson sweetgrass basket. She's a MacArthur Fellow and her baskets are out of this world.

Doesn't the lady who does the Pink Wallpaper blog live somewhere around Charleston? She would have great ideas.

Charleston is the best! Have a Drink at Husk Bar. It's very cool. Great lunch spots are Cru Cafe, Jestine's Kitchen, and Hominy Grill. Great dinner spots are Husk, Fig, SNOB, Magnolia's, and The Ordinary is the new hot spot.

I've read in the NYTimes that Husk is good. In the old days I ate some fantastic shrimp and grits (a MUST try) in a pink building in the southern end of the Battery.

be sure to go visit Folly Beach! .. and if you are wondering about the way the homes are situated 'sideways'...it's because when they were built, they were taxed based on how many windows faced the street. a very beautiful old city. take lots of photos of front doors...

You're going to love Charleston! We were just there a month ago visiting friends who just got a house in the historic downtown area.

Our favorite restaurants are Husk, The Ordinary (great space) Hominy Grill (try the buttermilk pie) and Fig. Save time for antiques and shopping on King Street (no bargains though). Hope you can make it out to Drayton Hall.

Cant wait to hear about your trip!

Michael

Dear Grant, I have an off-topic question. I absolutely love your work and following your blog, viewing you portfolio. My silly question is: when you cover the tops of your planters with the pretty moss, what do you put between the planter and the pot where the plant is planted so that the moss comes all the way to the edge of the planter ? Thank you! I hope you enjoy that trip to Charleston and come back with a beautiful sweet grass basket.

After you have dined at one of the lovely restaurants mentioned by Michael Hampton, make sure to take a stroll up and down Meeting Street, and taking note in particular of the gorgeous old B&B at 2 Meeting Street. April or May is, to me, the most delightful time of year to visit Charleston. You'll love it!

Leave time to walk the streets with your camera. There are so many charming architectural details. Next trip, try Savannah, Beaufort and Hilton Head. All worthy destinations.

Never a silly question. The plant pot is smaller than the basket. So I just take newspaper and bunch it up between the pot and the basket- around the same level of the height of the pot. Then I can spread the moss out all on top and it doesn't fall down the sides. Just remember to water it from the middle- not on the edges! Hope that helps!

I really loved the harbor tour to get a birds eye view of the surroundings. They also went by all the beautiful houses on the Battery. Don't miss the spices sold at the market they have great names like "spank your mama". If you love Charleston then you must hot foot it down to Savannah, another great Southern town.
