Weekend in the Country

I love to go away for little weekend trips.  Living in San Francisco allows for many adventures just a short distance outside of the city.

This past weekend, I attended the wedding of the daughter of a dear friend.  It was lovely to be part of the festivities for the special day.

The wedding took place on the Russian River.  When faced with finding a place to stay for the weekend, I vividly recalled reading about a charming cottage nearby in California Country Style by Diane Dorrans Saeks.  She wrote about designer Dane Robert Wilson and his perfect get-away from them city in a restored cottage (built in 1915) hidden in the redwoods of the small town of Forestville.

I contacted Dane and asked if by chance he rents his house - and lucky for me, he does!
He only recently started listing the cottage on Airbnb, as he had only used the place for himself or friends...(You might recall my finding the amazing riad in Marrakech on Airbnb as well).

The weekend was warm, relaxing and just perfect.  This cottage felt like a home away from home. Every detail so thought out.  Comfortable, relaxed and welcoming.  Filled with collections and antiques that surely have many stories to tell.  Only an hour and a half outside the city but a world away. I loved sitting on the porch in the afternoon, reading stacks of design magazines and enjoying iced tea.  Next time (see, I liked it so much I am already planning my next visit!), I hope take advantage of the outdoor barbecue.

I can’t speak highly enough of this little country retreat.  Dane has done a fantastic job.  If you are thinking of some time away in the Russian River area of Sonoma, I’d certainly recommend you consider it.

There is something about just getting away for a short weekend that is so refreshing.
Don’t you agree?

Speaking of weekends…Have a great one!

Must have been a lovely weekend. I lived in the bay area way back when, and the Sonoma Russian River area was one of my favorite getaway spots. Miss it.

Fantastic! I just bought a 1920s house in Guerneville. Hope to bring a little Dacha fantasy to the Russian river.

A charming and peaceful place, it would be fun if every one of us could have a country retreat like this, to escape for a few days leaving our i phones and ipads behind...

This is a great idea! I used Airbnb last year in Paris and loved it, but never even thought to use it in my own area. I am going to start looking for a getaway home immediately. Thanks very much!
