Maine

Last year I traveled to Maine for the first time.  Something about it made me fall in love with the place.  When friends with a house put out the invitation again this summer, I quickly jumped to booking my tickets.

Like last year, traveling after Labor Day was just perfect.  Tourists gone, kids back in school, a slight chill in the air with the knowledge that fall and winter are just around the corner.  You could just see the leaves on the verge of change.  The days were filled with scenic car rides, open houses and dreams of a vacation home, lobster rolls, sorting through stacks of old books and antiques, buying artwork from one eccentric local, staying in and cooking, baking, hours of laughing so hard that it made my stomach hurt.  Things could have been worse when a thunderstorm came rolling in, cancelling my return flight and extending my getaway for an extra day!

I love getting away for a refreshing respite.  This was just perfect.  Now I can dream about Maine until next year.  Thanks to C&C for a great few days!

Ah yes, Maine. We sent our son to camp there this summer. I am so grateful he got to experience all the beauty and wonder of that great state. I grew up in New England and still think it's the most beautiful area of the country.

I have always wanted to see Maine! Martha's Vineyard is abut as close as I have gotten. Next year perhaps! Love all the photos! Are those your feet on the balcony railing?

I'm curious about how the experience could be significantly different enough from Northern California coast (towns like Mendocino) for you to undertake the long travel necessary to get there.......

That's a very good question. My first trip to Maine was prompted by the invitation of dear friends...so the purpose of the trip was to spend time with them. But I must say that the Maine coast is really nothing like the California coast around Mendocino. First, since Maine has such a jagged coast, there are many small, relatively calm bays, rather than some of the large dramatic cliffs with crashing waves. It is heaven for sailing, which you see much more of than in California. Aside from the geography of the coast, Maine just feels different from California. The distinctive residential architecture, the majestic elm trees, the endless food stands serving up fresh lobster rolls - all of which contribute to a singular New England feeling.
