Rose Tarlow-Melrose House- Los Angeles

One of the highlights of my recent trip to Los Angeles was visiting the beautiful new location for designer Rose Tarlow. I have been a fan for so many years.

I have always loved Rose Tarlow's work and her furniture and fabric lines. It was such a treat to see everything in one space.
From the moment that I walked in the front door, what caught my attention was the fact that the space didn't seem like a showroom at all. The space felt like I had walked into a home. I know that this was what the team of Rose Tarlow was looking to do and they were so successful with this. I could see myself sitting with clients and really being enveloped by every detail from artwork, accessories, case pieces, lighting and antiques. Timeless, is a word that I would use to describe this space and the style of Rose.

The Private House is one of my favorite go to books and I am always consulting back to chapters on: color, light, fabric and furniture. One of her tips that I always remember is to arrange comfortable, upholstery paying special attention to how light affects your spaces; and use carpets as background only, never as the focus of a room.

This is one of my favorite quotes:

"There are those who spend lifetimes in houses that have nothing to do with who they really are. They may be perfectly designed, yet if they fail to reflect the personalities of the people who live in them, the very essence of intimacy is missing and this absence is disturbingly visible."
- Rose Tarlow

Make sure to visit if you are in the area!

This might be MY dream place to live.
You know the thing that I like about your posts?
They are fresh and with your photos!
Why don't other bloggers take photos and put their own touches on things? It is so much more exciting that just the same photos over and over again.
Thanks so much for sharing. A must for my next trip to LA.

EVerytime I visit this space I fall in love with everything in it. By looking at pictures I might think that a certain item isn't me, but once I see it in real life, I can't wait to sit, touch and just have it. I do have a big piggy bank and saving my money so that one day one of these gorgeous pieces can me in my home...

Thanks for posting and sharing!!

Every time I visit the space...I just want to move in! What these photos don't convey is that it even smells as good as it looks; a potpourri of rich woods, wax and something vaguely like santa maria novella. This space literally, stirs every one of your senses.

Megan- you are SO right! It does smell wonderful. Wood. Wax. Santa Maria. All in one. I am ready to move right in. I am sure it was a perfect location for your blog event a few weeks back.

In case people are interested- the trees are Fiddle Leaf Fig Ficus trees. Same as what I have in my house. I love them and always admired them in her work as well as Michael Taylors.

This is just beautiful and seems spiritual, even though it works for Rose.
I love the softness and the color is wonderful.
Thank You for sharing.

I think that really is one of the top 10 design books of all time -she is so inspirational -even if her 'style' is not your own! Lovely store.

Rose is one of my favorites (along with you too) and I can see a similar intimacy with your design aesthetics.
I rather love that she has only had a handful of clients.
Your images of course make me feel as if I were there.
Thanks for sharing such brilliance.

Does she talk about what color white she uses in her book? It is just beautiful. You always show us the most interesting places.

I just visited the showroom a few weeks ago and loved everything about it. Especially the fiddle leaf fig plants that were scattered throughout! Which as I just scrolled the comments you mentioned as well :) We even had a long discussion about how certain ones grew better than others since they've moved into that space. Anyway, I love The Private Home as well. When we were in the middle of building a few years ago I read the whole thing aloud to my husband on a very long road trip. Such great advice throughout. I hope to use more of it in the future if we ever have the opportunity to build again. Love the quote you have in there as well. Too true...I can think of several homes & owners that I love... While they are both beautiful, the enthusiasm & spirit of one of them spills over into all the details and it makes the home SUCH a joy to visit. It is a completely intimate and joyful experience to spend time there! Sorry for the ramble, I just love that book so much! Great post.
Sincerely * mrsplainjane
