Rue!

Have you heard about the latest design magazine?

RUE launched last week and I am so pleased to be featured in a shopping story around San Francisco showing off some great sources for interior finds.

Congratulations to the talented team at RUE!
Sorry that I missed the party in New York last night!

We have seen so many magazines fold over the last years, so it is just amazing that we have new beautiful publications launching. I can only imagine how much work goes into putting something like this together. I have such respect for this team of women that took a leap of faith and now look at them!

With the world changing and moving digital with iphones, email, ipads, and everything moving so fast- my question is this the way that the world is moving?

Are print magazines going away for good? Will be be seeing print magazines continue to go away? Will they stop printing and go digital?

Is reading digital magazines the new way we will be doing everything in the future?

For me I am not sure. I actually might be old fashioned, but I really love flipping the pages and tearing things out of magazines and saving them. Am I alone with this? I spend a lot of time online during the day and my eyes just hurt trying to read articles.

What do you think? Is print gone? Should we be trying to bring it back?

Tell me what you think!

Well, to start with, you can't even look at it on an iPad?
I mean really? They launched a new digital publication and didn't think of that one?
The picture of your dog and you makes me swoon.
I could look at that over and over again (the picuture, not the magazine)

Hello!

I prefer a print for anything that I want to read and actually think about, digital stories are usually pretty fleeting for me because they are replaced so quickly by new content. That being said, I like digital magazines because they have original content, compared to a lot of blogs that just point you to images that are circulating everywhere. I think that as long as the online magazines are free, I'll look at them. If they start wanting subscriptions, I'll probably pass.

I prefer print magazines, these online ones seem so clunky to me, but yes -i read them! I just can't get enough, print or online. It's shockingly simliar to Lonny I felt, but perhaps they will find their own voice as it's only the premiere issue.

I much prefer to read and flip through a magazine, and tear out pages for future reference. I absolutely loved looking through Rue - the content and photography were great but I couldn't help wishing I could have it in hand and really delve in!

Grant, I enjoyed seeing you and my other virtual friends on Rue, I wrote a post on it. Having said that I will read Rue, as other online magazines but I rather prefer to have a real paper magazine to hold and to save. Easy on my eyes too.
Has instant coffee made coffee disappear?! I loved that advertising.
Magazines (good ones) are here to stay and we as bloggers need to support them.

First congrats on the feature!

I will never tire of printed magazines or books...totally old fashioned too. Plus I can take them to bed easier!!! Somehow, a kindle or an iPad is just not something I can cozy up to.

But, I certainly wish them luck, because as you mentioned that is a tremdous amount of work they have invested.

Surely you jest, Grant, when you ask if you're "the only one" who likes a real magazine with real pages in his hands. I'm all for progress & all--I even broke down & bought a cellular communications device, which will be be great once I learn how to retrieve messages, and if I don't lose it first--but with the speed of change, a lot of what we can read online today will likely be inaccessible in the future.

Twenty years ago, I was in the engineering department at the Phone Company, and most of what's left of my work there is stored on slowing degrading floppy discs that no one has the technology to read, although my predecessors' work--in pencil on vellum rolled up in aluminum tubes, or ink on mylar hanging in sreel files--is readily accesible.

I just spent a few days going through the dusty, century-old pages of House Beautiful, because the information I needed simply doesn't exist online. And, sure, I got dirty, but I came home with exactly the information & the images I needed. Does anybody really expect an online magazine to have that kind of shelf life?

Blogs' contents are even more vulnerable--here today, gone tomorrow. Last May, the entire archive of the single most intelligent & articulate design blog ever seen vanished into thin air. What if you opened an encyclopedia and found all the pages were blank? No, blogs are fun, and digital magazines are convenient--sort of: see comment No. 1--but give me a paper magazine any day. I can deal with the inky fingers.

NO, Grant. We cannot allow that to happen! I have been so concerned
lately. I really DO NOT LIKE to sit and stare at a monitor screen for
very long. I check email frequently and go to the internet when searching
for necessary, quick information. I "over subscribe" to magazines of all
kinds that appeal to my interests. Decorating magazines seem to prevail!
I, too, love to be able to tear out or clip pictures and articles that
appeal to me. I have a big brown envelope that I tuck them into. Every
now and then I weed it out. We need to barrage the publishers to "keep on
keeping on!"

I think that there is a place for all of this online media. It is the way that the world is going for sure. But I think that it is so important to keep print alive as well!

@ La Maison Fou- it is my dog- this one is Campbell.
I have 2 Westies. The other is Wallace- he didn't make it to this photo shoot- but he is excited to be in something else coming out soon. I have to spread them out in publications! Haha!

Grant, Congrats on your great feature. I love holding magazines too but am loving the online ones just as much with their great links and ease. I hope I can keep reading both!

Thanks so much for the Rue mention Grant! We were so honored to have you in our premiere issue! We hope to see both print and digital shelter publications soar and co-exist! Why choose just one, when the design community can have both ;)

xo,
Crystal

P.S. And yes, we are working hard on getting an iPad app!

Thanks Crystal for popping by! I do think that there is a place for both online and print. I am so happy for you and your team! See you in SF soon.

Late to this discussion but wanted to say I was so excited to see Krimsa on your list...I was in SF for the first time this Spring and I could have stayed in there forever. Even living near High Point, NC, there's nothing like that place here. Wish I had access to them every day!
