What would you do?

The July-August issue of House Beautiful is on the stands. My copy arrived this afternoon in the mail and I have spend the afternoon swooning over the issue. Under the new direction, Newell Turner (his first issue as editor in chief) has made my jaw drop. This issue is a keeper for sure!

I am just in love with the cover 390 square foot one bedroom (loving the colors, creative storage, bright red closets and the 18th-century Chinese wallpaper), the 450 foot studio (balcony, fireplace, white floors, adorable kitchen and toile screen and daybed) and the One-Day bedroom makeover.

Since my apartment is also small, I always love seeing how people are creative in their spaces, without having the luxury of space.

In the feature called: WHAT WOULD YOU DO? I picked a couple of my favorites to create a fun looking shower curtain!

"Since the bathroom is white, I thought playing a bit with color would be fun. This is an outdoor fabric, which avoids the mold problem. Most rings are metal or plastic, so I picked something a bit different and unexpected- bamboo. I chose the nickel rod to tie in with the rest of the fixtures in the bathroom."

(Row Stripe in Moss/Pistachio: perennialsfabrics.com. Universal Straight Rod, 72" in Nickel: waterworks.com. Bamboo shower curtain rings: bungalowbeachdesigns.com.)

A client was telling me about this just yesterday!
I love space, but I also love small spaces done well, with clever little things. Love those bamboo rings.

Grant, without even knowing that was your doing, THAT was the combination that my eyes were instantly drawn to.

Well done, kiddo!

loved your choice as well.I have to agree this is my favorite issue in ages. I especially love seeing REAL apartments (of REAL sizes!) that seem attainable and full of personality. I think rather than being shredded for clipping files -this magazine is a keeper like you say :-)

Was as happy to see you there as I am to see you here.

Can't wait to see this issue. I live in a 650 square foot NYC apartment, which can be a challenge.

I like your choice of shower curtain. Very nice!

I love that they're showing small spaces. My current house is 850 sf, and any new one that I buy will be about 1100+/-. There are so many people who don't live in MASSIVE houses, so it's nice to show more realistic spaces.

... And I loved your suggestions!

I LOVE this issue too! My favorite is the garage/guesthouse but I also think the bedroom (in your favorite) with that precious trundle bed is done so well - love that old wallpaper!

Your use of outdoor fabric is brilliant and the bamboo rings add such interest to what is usually a boring feature that people forget to make interesting !

Dynamite bamboo rings! I may have to replace some of the metal ones that are really grating on my nerves of late.

Grant,

Great choices for bathroom. Creativity blossoms with small spaces and builds on great quality pieces.

Hi Grant, I agree, it is one of the best issues..........I have used the discontinued Perennials stripe in black and bright green. It has
been hanging by my south facing front doors for seven years and looks like new. I ordered 30 yards and am doing outdoor recovering.

Congrats Grant! Wow...you are EVERYWHERE! So happy to see it. :)

And yes, this issue was so much fun to read.I loved that apartment too.How they live in such a small space is still beyond what I could do, but I loved it! I also loved the Balboa Beach House...just a skip away from where I spent every summer growing up. It still has the old flavor of Balboa/Newport without any of the Housewives of OC vibe (ew!) Ah...memories!

I think yours was far and away the best choice - although for some reason, at first glance, before I read the captions, I thought it might be the black and white .

I love this issue of HB, too - hands down one of the best I've seen. I share your preference for that tiny one bedroom. It's a real jewelbox.
